Doodle Health

Beautiful happy dogs start with excellent nutrition. A healthy dog glistens. It takes top quality nutrients to nourish the labradoodle’s non-shedding coat and all the organs you can’t see. We have put much thought and research into choosing the products we feed our labradoodles.

Now we offer them to you so your dog can enjoy the health that our Desert Waves labradoodles have.

Bringing Puppy Home

Preparing in advance will make bringing your puppy home less stressful. We have given your puppy a careful and thoughtful start in life. These resources will help you continue to give your pup the best start possible.

  • Supplies for Puppy & Beyond

With our busy labradoodle household we have essentially become a dog product testing site. I want to share our best recommendations with you so you are well set up for the newest member of your family.

    WHEN PUPPY FIRST COMES HOME:

    1. SmartPetLoveSnuggle Puppy Behavioral Aid Toy  If you don’t have another dog at home to sleep near your puppy’s playpen, I recommend that you get one of these. It will help your pup feel more secure those first nights without his litter mates.
    2. Life’s Abundance Biodeodorizer I have tried many pet stain cleaners and this is the best one.
    3. Rescue Disinfectant: It comes in concentrateready-to-use spray bottle, and wipes. Have Rescue on hand to disinfect to protect your puppy. We will talk more about precautions to keep your puppy safe until he has immunity during our Puppy Pick Up class. Rescue disinfectant is the best to use for Parvo. It kills 100% of the virus. Many disinfectants labelled for Parvo do not kill 100 % of the virus. Parvo is virulent! You need to kill 100%.
    4. Calming Music – for bedtime or anytime you want your doodle to feel relaxed.  It has been shown through scientific study that classical music played at low volume is calming to dogs. We put our litters to bed with classical music. I recently found this gem, the iCalmDog 5.0 Bluetooth Speaker + 3 hrs Clinicially-Tested Classical Dog Calming Music!  This selection of music is particularly calming.  You can use this throughout your dog’s life. This is perfect for when your doodle is home alone.
    5. Calming Pheromone: Adaptil room diffuser mimics the mother’s nursing pheromones which is calming to puppies and mature dogs alike. This is a great thing to do for your new puppy! Adaptil also comes in a spraypuppy collar, and adult collar for travel or trips to the vet and groomer. For the trip home spray the crate in the car, then bring puppy home to a house with the diffuser. This will help puppy feel at ease.

    TOYS & CHEWS:

Your puppy will need toys to chew on! This is a natural and unavoidable maturational development that is important for the proper development of their teeth. As with anything that your puppy chews there can always be a complication or problem, but your puppy needs to chew. Here are my recommendations for relatively safe toys and chews. You may also want to consult with your veterinarian regarding his recommendations for chew toys.

    1. Life’s Abundance Porky Puffs  In addition to the Porky Puffs being safer than rawhides, they are non-greasy and have no artificial colors so you don’t have to worry about them staining your carpets and rugs. Our dogs love them! I can’t keep enough in the house!
    2. Kong Toys tend to be safe because they are difficult to tear up and ingest. Unfortunately, I don’t find my dogs are terribly interested in them, but they do like ring toys. Get the small for puppy and the medium when mature.
    3. Charming Pet Cuddle Tugs – My dogs LOVE these! They last a long time so I love them too!
    4. goDog Just For Me Flying Pig with Chewguard – Dogs love stuffies but they chew them up and you have to worry about your dog ingesting them. These toys with Chewguard last much better.
    5. Antlers are good for chewing. They last a long time.
    6. Benebone Real Bacon Durable Dental Dog Chew Toy for Aggressive Chewers – My dogs love these because they can use their paws to tilt them up for chewing.
    7. Bitter Yuk by NaturVet is a “no chew” product to spray on furniture etc that you don’t want your puppy to chew – it works well. It is water based.

    PUZZLE TOYS AND SLOW FEEDERS:

Your labradoodle is very smart. They need something to do with all that brain power. Feeding your doodle in puzzle toys will keep him happily occupied. This is a must for those of you that have to work out of the home all day. Ours won’t even eat out of a regular bowl anymore. They show no interest in some puzzle toys, however.  These are the ones they like.

    1. Outward Hound Fun Feeder – All of my dogs have access to one of these.
    2. Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound – Interactive Puzzle Game – I use this one for supervised treats. My dogs love this. You do have to supervise with this puzzle or they will chew up the covers.
    3. Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound Wobble Bowl – This is a favorite!
    4. Planet Dog Snoops and Nooks – Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toys  – My doodles like to hide this one from each other. I’ve tried other balls and they haven’t liked them. This one they like. I can fit a lot of food in it.
    5. Dog Puzzle Toys for Smart Dogs Upgraded – This is another favorite. The bottom is a slow feeder and the top spins and food spills out. This gives them 2 types of puzzles to work.

    BOOKS TO READ:

Like it or not you are your puppy’s pack leader. If you aren’t a good one your puppy will be insecure which can lead to all sorts of behavior problems. Here are some books I recommend to get you on the right track.

    1. How To Be The Leader of Your Pack…And Have Your Dog Love You For It by Patricia McConnell – If you read nothing else, read this!  This is a quick read & shows you how to use dogs’ natural body language to take the right approach with your puppy so he/she looks to you for leadership & can be calm & relaxed.
    2. The Puppy Primer by Patricia McConnell, PhD & Brenda Scidmore – A 6 week training program to get you and your puppy off to a good start.
    3. How To Behave So Your Dog Behaves by Sophia Yin, DVM – This books gives excellent instructions for training your dog. Please have this book on hand for continued training.

ORDER THE RIGHT FOOD FOR YOUR PUPPY

It is important that you keep your puppy on the same food we start them on: Life’s Abundance All Life Stages dog food. Dogs are sensitive to any change in food and may get diarrhea. If your puppy has diarrhea you have to go to an emergency vet hospital to be sure it is not something serious.

Life's Abundance - all life stage dog food

We are continually evaluating the best puppy rearing practices and related scientific research. We raise our dogs and puppies on Life’s Abundance All Life Stages dog food for a number of reasons:

    1. They use high quality, carefully controlled ingredients from fresh food sources.
    2. Their quality control is superior. Quality control has become a significant concern in dog foods. They produce the food in small batches and have only a few environmentally controlled warehouses with a high turnover so the food is always fresh. By doing this they have eliminated the lack of quality control involved in online retail and chain store retail such as long storage times and unknown temperatures in warehouses.
    3. It has prebiotics and probiotics, antioxidants with omega-3 fatty acids and is well-balanced for growth in terms of energy levels, protein levels, mineral balance, and calcium/phosphorous ratios. This is so important.
    4. No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives
    5. It does not contain corn or wheat both of which can increase the chance of allergies or itching in some dogs.

Life’s Abundance All Life Stage dog food is similar in price to comparable premium dog foods.

You can feed the All Life Stage dog food to puppies and adults making it easier if you have more than 1 dog.

  • Puppy Potty Box

    Puppy using a potty box

We Condition Our Puppies To Use A Potty Box

This helps you until your puppy is potty trained. Purchase a puppy potty box and paper litter pellets. Use potty boxes in your puppy’s night-time pen and daytime indoor play pen when you cannot carefully monitor your puppy.

We find that puppies we’ve raised this way house train more readily than puppies raised without potty box conditioning. This gives them a mindset to go potty in a potty area and not just anywhere. Think of your puppy potty box as “training pants”.

    Puppy Pans

    Puppy Litter

    • After much trial and error – Alfalfa Pellets work best & are a natural transition to going outside
    • Less dusty & covers smell better than other litter
    • Alfalfa Pellets can be ordered on Amazon or are at your local feed store.

    Advantages

    • It lets you ignore your puppy’s nighttime noise, so that puppy doesn’t get reinforced for making noise.
    • You get a good night’s sleep because puppy has access to a potty place.
    • If your labradoodle ever needs to be confined due to an injury later in life you can confine him in an extra large crate or small dog pen with a potty box

  • Puppy Play Pens

You need a safe place for your puppy when you are too busy to carefully watch him. Set up a Safe Room or a Puppy Play Pen with a potty pan in it.

    Puppy Safe Room

    • like your kitchen, laundry room or bathroom

    Puppy Play Pen

    Be Sure:

    1. There are no electrical cords to chew, or other unsafe things for your puppy to get into.
    2. The floor surface can be easily cleaned
    3. If the flooring is slippery buy bath mats so puppy has good traction. Slippery surfaces when young can contribute to the development of arthritis when older.
    4. Your Desert Waves puppy has been conditioned to use a potty box as a first step towards potty training. Put a potty pan in the pen at one end, so you can leave your puppy there all night and when you are too busy to get puppy outside 2-3 times per hour.
    5. Think of your playpen and potty box like “training pants” for puppies to help you until they have matured enough to control their potty needs.
